deepdvd movie encodes the files but doesn't burn

I can run my computer but this is the first time I have tried to burn or copy a dvd..I have old home movies put onto
DVD's and would like to save them in my computer like documents and then copy them off at a later date.. Is this possible and if so could some one give me the process step by step...Thanks lindy lou too
