failed attempt to copy a DVD

I am a newbie here. I am trying to copy a DVD of old family home movies from the 40s to a DVD-RW. I created the ISO image file, appx 1gb, then burned onto disk. The disk appears empty and nothing writes even tho DBPro claims the process was a success. If I try to use the disk again, DBPro says it must erase existing data first, does so, then says Illegal action to write to that part of the disk. Is the disk trashed, and can DBPro copy this type of DVD?
